HUP- ZAGREB Inc. hotels proudly suppor the global initiative Earth Hour

25.03.2017

Zagreb’s oldest and biggest hotel and tourism company, HUP-Zagreb Inc. will turn off the non-essential lighting in all of its hotels to support Earth Hour on Saturday, 19th of March 2016, and join millions around the globe in sending a strong message on environmental awareness and care for the planet.

The global initiative Earth Hour began in 2007 in Sydney when 2,2 million people and over 2000 businesses turned off lights in their homes and offices to express their concern for climate change. Only one year later Earth Hour became a global action with over 50 million supporters in 35 countries worldwide. Famous monuments such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco or the roman Colosseum were completely dark during this noble initiative. This year once again many cities around the world will unite to send a strong message on the importance of environmental protection and care for our planet.

Today, the big challenge climate change presents has become visible in our everyday life. In order to make a change, we need to start from ourselves and implement the ‘’green’’ way of thinking in private and business aspects of our lives. The Westin Zagreb and Sheraton Zagreb Hotel, as well as Panorama Zagreb Hotel, Hotel International and Hotel Jadran will apply energy saving actions during Earth Hour, starting at 8:30 p.m. To support this action, hotels will turn off the external façade lighting and reduce the lights in public spaces, use candles in all public areas, such as restaurants and bars, inform guests on Earth hour and encourage them to participate in this action. This year, HUP-Zagreb’s hotels in Dubrovnik, the newly opened Sheraton Dubrovnik Riviera Hotel and hotel Astarea, will also join Earth Hour and prepare special events to mark this occasion.

In 2015 more than 172 countries showed their support for Earth Hour. Over 10,000 monuments worldwide were completely dark, including 42 World Heritage sites. Starwood Hotels & Resorts, i.e. Starwood hotels in Zagreb, The Westin Zagreb and the Sheraton Zagreb Hotel, along with their umbrella company HUP- Zagreb Inc. hotels, will participate in this global action eighth year in a row.

We hope for an even greater response this year as well as further awareness on the importance of small steps towards energy saving and care for the planet

Earth Hour is an opportunity for all of us to make a small step for a big change – Lights off, please.
